Stock photos and AI images are fine as temporary tools, like website placeholders, mockups, or visualizing something you can’t photograph yet. They fall short as the face of your brand because they can’t show your real face, process, results, or product, and they can’t build the trust that helps a business grow. A real branding photoshoot can.
This topic has come up in conversation a few times lately, and I recently shared a post about it on my socials. People keep asking what I think as a brand strategist and photographer, so here is the full breakdown.
Yes, as a limited tool. I’m not anti-stock and I’m not anti-AI. Both can be practical when you use them on purpose.
The trouble starts when they become the thing representing your brand. There is a big difference between using an image to fill a gap and relying on it to tell people who you are.

They work well as placeholders for a new website while you build out the rest of your brand, and as a budget-friendly start when your business is brand new. They’re also useful for visualizing something you can’t photograph right now (like that private jet you don’t own… yet). When you’re short on time, instant downloads and endless options make them easy to use, and they’re handy for testing a concept or mockup before you book a real photoshoot.
Used this way, they are a smart, practical strategy.
When your goal is to grow a recognizable brand, however, your images need to do more than look good.
Stock photos do not show your face, your space, your unique offer, your actual client experience, or your personality or process.
There is another catch. Every other business has the ability to use the exact same photos, so you can end up blending in with everyone else instead of standing out.
AI images are cheap, quick, and great for testing ideas.
But they do not show your real process, your real results, your real product, your real environment, or the real you.
AI can create a representation of an experience, but it can’t document the one you actually delivered. It can’t show what really happened.
Authenticity is the other big issue. In most cases, it is pretty obvious when an image is AI-generated. Some people are also using AI like an automatic filter or Photoshop, changing their appearance even slightly. When you’re building a personal brand, showing the human side of your business is what makes people connect with you.
If you sell products or results, this matters even more. People are hesitant to buy things that don’t feel genuine, so they need to see real images of the real items and the real results.
Your images shape your audience’s opinion of your brand every time someone lands on your website or scrolls past your content. Strong brand photos help your audience:
Stock and AI images can fill a space, but they struggle to do these six jobs.

When your visuals don’t reflect the real person, experience, and expertise behind your brand, you miss opportunities to build trust, connection, credibility, and recognition. It can also cause hesitation right at the moment someone is deciding whether to work with you or buy from you.
Over time, that can hold your growth back.

A real branding photoshoot gives you a bank of strategic marketing visuals that help you show up as the expert you are. Instead of piecing together images that were made for everyone, you have photos that are 100% you: recognizable, credible, and built to grow with your business.
I offer half day branding photoshoots and power hour sessions, depending on how much content you need.

Is it bad to use stock photos on my website? Not necessarily. Stock photos work well as temporary placeholders or for visualizing something you can’t photograph yet. They become a problem when they’re the main images representing your brand, because they can’t show your real face, space, or process.
Can I use AI-generated images for my business? Yes, for things like mockups and testing concepts before a real shoot. I’d avoid using them to represent your real process, results, or products, since your audience wants to see the real thing before they buy.
Why do real photos build more trust than AI or stock images? Real photos show the actual person, place, and work behind a brand. That helps your audience recognize you, connect with you, and feel confident that what they see is what they’ll get.
What is a branding photoshoot? A branding photoshoot is a session designed to create a library of strategic marketing images for your business, including your website, social media, and other marketing. It focuses on showing who you are, how you work, and what makes you different.
How do I know when I’m ready to move on from stock photos? A good sign is when you’re ready to grow, scale, or be recognized as the expert in your field. If your current visuals don’t reflect the real person and expertise behind your brand, it may be time to invest in real photos.
