How often should you update your brand or commercial photos?
If you’ve ever scrolled through your website and thought, “ugh, these photos don’t even look like my business anymore,” you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked most as a brand photographer and content strategist — and the honest answer is: it depends, but there are some clear signs that will tell you.
Most business owners should plan for a new brand or commercial photography session once a year, with a full refresh at least every other year if nothing significant has changed about your appearance or your business. If you’re a high-content brand posting frequently, launching often, or leaning heavily on visuals to sell, you’ll likely want fresh images more often, sometimes quarterly.
There’s no single “right” number. The real answer depends on how much has changed in your business, how often you’re creating content, and how big your existing photo gallery is to pull from.

A photo refresh isn’t just about the calendar. Here are the moments that usually mean it’s time:
Your appearance has changed. New haircut, new glasses, a different go-to wardrobe — if you look noticeably different than you do in your current photos, your audience will notice the disconnect too.
You’ve added new offers or services. If your brand photos don’t show what you’re actually selling today, they’re not doing their job. New offers deserve new imagery that positions them properly.
Your business has grown or shifted. A bigger team, a new location, a rebrand, or simply a more established version of the business you started — growth is one of the most common reasons clients come back for updated brand and commercial photography.
Your website or marketing feels outdated. If your imagery doesn’t match the level of business you’re running today, it can quietly undercut the trust you’re trying to build with new clients.
Your ideal client has evolved. As you get clearer on exactly who you want to work with, your photos should reflect that person back to them — the vibe, the setting, the story you’re telling.
You need seasonal content. Evergreen photos are great, but a library that includes some seasonal variety keeps your marketing feeling current and relatable throughout the year.

Here’s my honest, real-world recommendation as someone who does this every day:
If you’re only ever using the same 10–15 photos across your website, social media, proposals, and press features, your audience is seeing those same images far more often than you think. That repetition is usually the real sign it’s time to book something new, not a timeline.
This isn’t just about having “nicer” photos. Consistent, current brand imagery does real work for your business. Research from Marq has found that businesses presenting their brand consistently across all channels can see revenue increases of 10–33%. Photos are one of the biggest levers in that consistency. In fact, they’re often the very first thing a potential client sees before they read a single word you’ve written.
Outdated or mismatched imagery does the opposite. It creates a subtle gap between how good your business actually is and how it appears online. And that gap is exactly what makes people hesitate before reaching out.

If you’re not sure where you fall on this spectrum, ask yourself:
Whether your answers to those questions point to a full brand photography session or a quicker Power Hour to fill in the gaps, keeping your visuals current is one of the simplest ways to keep your marketing working as hard as you do.
